Short or extended, plastic or metal

Extended valves (#03-10, #03-04) put the lever further from the patient's mouth and give the assistant more room; short valves (#03-09, #03-03) are lighter and easier in a tight operatory. Metal levers last longer under heavy use and survive being dropped; plastic is lighter and cheaper to replace. DCI Precision Comfort valves (#03-042 extended, #03-032 short) match DCI delivery units, and the ErgoFlex system (#06-500) is for practices trying to take strain off the assistant's wrist.

When it is the valve, and when it is the line

Suction that has dropped at every chair is a line or pump problem, not a valve — start with the vacuum line and the filters (Practice Tip #60 and Practice Tip #112, which makes the case for a shock treatment over daily enzymatic flushing alone). Suction that has dropped at one chair, or a valve that leaks air when it is closed, is the valve itself: O-rings first, then the whole valve.
