Water distillers and distilled water supplies for sterilizers and self-contained water bottles. The cheapest way to stop scale destroying an autoclave.

Why distilled, not filtered
Practice Tip #46 answers this directly: an autoclave wants water at 5 ppm total dissolved solids or less. Tap water, softened water and most filtered water are not close, and the minerals do not boil off — they stay in the chamber and in the lines. Poor or low flow through an autoclave's pipes and valves, overheating, and failure to reach pressure all trace back to water quality more often than to a failed component.
Distiller or delivered water
A countertop distiller pays for itself in a practice running a sterilizer daily, and takes the ordering decision away entirely. Where space is short, bought distilled water works, provided somebody checks that it is distilled and not 'purified'. Either way, clean the reservoir out when debris appears — Practice Tip #46 recommends using your own suction to clear it — and check the fill-line and reservoir filters at the same time.
