Anesthesia

Aspirating syringes, needles, cartridge dispensers and irrigation tips. Metal syringes are repairable — the harpoon, the thumb ring and the plunger are the parts that wear, not the whole instrument.

Syringe types, and what fits them

Two body styles cover almost every operatory: the Astra type (#AS-01) with its narrow thumb ring, and the Cook-Waite type (#AS-02) with the wider ring. Both take standard 1.8 ml cartridges. The intraligamental syringe (#AS-15) is a different animal — it is geared for pressure, and it uses short needles only. Needles are sold by gauge and length: 27G and 30G, short and long, in the Painless Steel (#AS-50) and Monoject plastic-hub (#AS-705) and metal-hub (#AS-706) ranges.

The parts that actually wear

A syringe that will not aspirate has a dull or bent harpoon, not a dead body. A plunger that creeps has a tired spring. Both are stocked separately, so keep one of each on the shelf rather than a spare syringe. Cartridge dispensers (#19-25) keep the carpules in date order and off the tray. For irrigation, the side-port tips come in 27ga (#19-617) and 30ga (#19-618) — side-port, so the solution does not jet straight down the canal.
