Handpiece Lubricant

Handpiece lubricants, cleaners and the pin oilers that deliver them. Lubrication is the single biggest factor in how long a handpiece lasts.

Clean first, then lubricate, then sterilize

Practice Tip #9 names inadequate lubrication and inadequate sterilization care as the two causes of most handpiece failures, and the order matters: clean with Pro-Kleen (#15-930), lubricate with Pro-Lube+ (#15-900 pin oiler, #15-901 bottles, #15-902 bulk) or BioLube (#15-903), then autoclave. Lubricating a dirty handpiece pushes debris into the bearings. Autoclavable silicone (#03-40) is for O-rings and seals, not for turbines.

Matching the lubricant to the handpiece

European handpieces generally want the lighter Euro lubricant (#15-92); KaVo's Quattrocare takes its own (#15-931). Lube-free turbines exist and should not be oiled at all — check the model before you start a practice-wide routine. The maintenance kit (#15-908) bundles the cleaner, the lubricant and the oiler for a practice starting a schedule from scratch.
