Understanding Cold Sterilization vs. Disinfection:

• Cold Sterilization: Extended immersion (6-10 hours) in EPA-registered sterilant solution to kill all microorganisms including spores
• High-Level Disinfection: Shorter immersion (10-30 minutes) to kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi but not necessarily all spores
• Pre-Cleaning Soak: Brief immersion to loosen debris before ultrasonic cleaning or scrubbing

Important Note: Heat sterilization (autoclave) is the gold standard and preferred method for dental instruments. Cold sterilization should only be used for heat-sensitive items that cannot be autoclaved.
